May 25 — The Reader, a student-run literary and art magazine, returned to campus this semester after an eight-year hiatus. The publication accepts a range of submissions from students including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, artwork, and photography. This semester’s specific theme was “equinox”, the period of struggle between darkness and light. Although submissions for the equinox edition officially closed on April 20th, The Reader will offer future opportunities for students to share their creative work through its biannual publications.
Leapfrog spoke with Faune Albert, co-director of the Writing Program, and faculty advisor to The Reader. She was delighted at its reemergence and remarked “when I started four years ago, I had the desire to start it again. It’s such a great thing to have a literary magazine to create community around writing.”
Leapfrog also reached out to Kaihla Laurent, ‘22, Editor-in-Chief of The Reader, and they shared a similar excitement about the positive benefits The Reader provides for the Hampshire writing community. Laurent commented that “working to revive The Reader means a lot to me—it feels like a chance to bring the creative writing community at Hampshire back together, to create a space where we can share our work, our voices, and our stories.” They also emphasized the increased accessibility of the The Reader through digitization and hopes that it continues to be a fixture on campus.
